Empowering Voices: My Experience as a Presenter at the BBBM Conference in Grand Rapids, MI
Walking into Grand Rapids for the Black Boys and Men (BBBM) Conference this year felt like stepping into a living vision of possibility. The atmosphere was electric—full of community leaders, educators, advocates, and innovators all united by one mission: to uplift, equip, and empower Black boys and men to reach their fullest potential.
This year, I had the honor of not just attending, but presenting—an opportunity that still humbles me as I reflect on the experience.
A Gathering of Purpose
The conference was more than just workshops and keynote speeches—it was a living testament to resilience, legacy, and forward-thinking action. From the opening plenary to the breakout sessions, the conversations were bold, unfiltered, and rooted in the belief that the future of our communities depends on the investment we make in our young men today.
The Grand Rapids venue buzzed with collaboration. Panels explored topics from mental health and education to economic empowerment and leadership development. Everywhere I turned, I met passionate individuals committed to changing the narrative for Black boys and men.
My Session: Creating Space for Truth and Growth
As a presenter, I wanted my session to be more than just information—it had to be transformational. I spoke on the intersection of holistic wellness, faith, and leadership development, drawing from my own journey as an author, minister, coach, and advocate.
We explored:
How self-awareness and mental resilience are the foundation for leadership
The importance of mentorship and intergenerational connections
Practical strategies for overcoming barriers in education, career, and personal growth
What moved me most was the participation. Attendees didn’t just listen—they engaged, challenged ideas, and shared their own stories. We created a space of mutual respect and empowerment, where every voice mattered.
Moments That Will Stay With Me
A young college student sharing that he finally felt “seen” in a professional space.
Seasoned mentors expressing how they were leaving with new tools and a renewed commitment to their work.
The collective energy in the room when we spoke about reclaiming our narratives and building generational wealth.
These moments are why conferences like BBBM matter—they’re catalysts for lasting change.
Looking Forward
Leaving Grand Rapids, I carried with me not just the notes from other sessions, but a deeper sense of responsibility. The BBBM Conference reinforced something I already knew: our work is not a moment—it’s a movement.
To the organizers, fellow presenters, and every attendee who showed up with open hearts and minds—thank you. Together, we’re building bridges of opportunity and hope. And as I look ahead, I’m more committed than ever to ensuring that the seeds planted in these spaces bear fruit for generations to come.
